In the wake of this deadly pandemic and the lockdown induced by it, our first thoughts were about how to reach out to our children, women, older people and their communities. Topmost in our minds were the remotest villages of our operational areas and urban slums, their survival, safety and their health. Therefore, during the lockdown period, Sneha Abhiyan’s efforts, along with its supporting partner Action Aid India, have been concentrated on reaching all households as far as possible, with basic counseling and promotion of COVID Appropriate Behavior. We also focused on our awareness generation and advocacy programs with our target communities and local government bodies, primarily through home visits and mainly through phone calls and messages, in keeping with the social distancing protocols. Sneha Abhiyan has been spreading awareness, distributing relief materials and advocating for the access and availability of services to the communities and children.
Awareness-building programs covered topics like socialdistancing, best practices related to public health and hygiene and behavior change, vaccination, sanitization, use of face masks, following government guidelines during the lockdown period and ways to protect people from community spreading of the epidemic. As part of the awareness program, mike's announcement was done on hand washing, social distancing, vaccination and wearing masks. Covid was regarded as an urban disease by rural people until sometime ago. We sensitized the rural communities to follow covid appropriate behavior. Since May 2020 a total 11060 people (Men 4320 Women 4412 children 2328) have been covered in 37 villages of 10 Gram panchayats of Erasama block in Jagatsinghpur as part of awareness, counseling and relief distribution. The Sneha Abhiyan team has been doing active surveillance in its operational areas in Erasama block. The government health staff such as ASHAs, Anganwadi workers and ANMs have been coordinated to keep a hawk’s eyes on possible infections and report them.
In the aftermath of cyclone Tauktae in the Erasama block of Jagatsingpur, there was a high risk of new COVID-19 outbreaks emerging during that period. Recognizing the risk involved in the evacuation of people during the pandemic, The Sneha Abhiyan team sensitized and requested the people to wear double masks in shelters and wash their hands with soap and sanitizer before the cyclone hit the areas. Following the latest COVID-19 outbreak in Odisha, Sneha Abhiyan has been working with local women groups to raise awareness and convince people to avail vaccination in remote locations.
